(Currently supports AddThis.) Fixes and improvements: - Crossposting works for all formats, including the Atom and MetaWeb APIs. - Editing a blog post gets the proper local time, rather than keeping it in GMT. It also no longer drops the excerpt field, and the tag is properly supported. - MetaWeb API categories are separated by commas, not spaces (so category names that are multi-word are properly handled). - A copy of the GPLv2 is now included as LICENSE, in order to support package distribution requirements. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 12th, 2008 -- Charm 1.8.0 New features: - Support for the MetaWeb API (WordPress, notably). - Command-line cross-posting ability. - New -t tags command-line option. Fixes and improvements: - Don't post if the message body is empty. - Atom API errors now show the exception raised. - Documented -j journal option. - Moved primary site from Sourceforge to Google Code, for reliability. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 23rd, 2005 -- Charm 1.7.0 New features: - Support for the Atom API (Movable Type and Blogger, notably). - Support for LiveJournal's tag system and Movable Type categories. Fixes and improvements: - If you use the commpics option, the picture names now show up in the journal selection menu. - Fixed a typo in username selection. - Fixed a crash when archive_edits is not set. - Filenames with spaces should no longer cause problems. - Prevent loss of lastsync time when the most recent sync resulted in no new journal entries. - Sync mode should behave better in retrying when there's a failure. - Began incorporating code cleanup suggestions from Bill Weiss. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- June 13th, 2005 -- Charm 1.6.0 New features: - Charm now has a real manual! See the charm.html file. - Charm now has man pages (for Charm itself, for the charmrc file). - You can now add, delete, rename, and edit (including changing the sort order) friends groups. - You can now edit the colors and friends groups of your friends. - Support for syncitems has been added. This means that you can now efficiently download your entire journal, and keep your offline archive up to date. The new -z, --sync command-line option lets you run Charm in a synchronize-only mode, which is useful for calling it out of cron on a nightly basis. - The comments screening journal metadata property is now supported. You can choose how you want to screen comments of a post from within Charm. - Charm supports use of an external spellchecker. By default, this is GNU aspell, but you can set it to whatever you like by changing the "spellchecker" configuration option in your .charmrc. - You can now choose a journal site for each individual username that you have, which is useful if you have accounts on multiple sites. Fixes and Improvements: - Charm will prompt you for a password if you've chosen a username for which it has no login or hlogin information in your .charmrc. - Network faults are better handled in operations that depend on XML-RPC. - The view journal feature now also works for sites other than LiveJournal. - Default security settings from .charmrc are properly restored when starting a new post after posting or editing another entry. - When writing an archive, the item ID and the post options (such as preformat, nocomments, etc.) are now saved. - If a post has both a mood ID and mood text, save both of them when writing an archive file. - System error messages are displayed if available. - Some minor code cleanup. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 9th, 2004 -- Charm 1.5.0 Some of the changes in this version of Charm require a minimum Python version. If you don't have a sufficiently recent Python installation, Charm will use alternative methods, or notify you that a feature is not supported. The client should still run regardless. New features: - Administrative console commands are supported. You can now manage your friends list, manage communities, manage posting access to shared journals, and administrate bans from Charm. Utilizes the XML-RPC client protocol, and thus requires at least Python 2.2. - XMMS-based music detection is now supported, via the PyXMMS module, which can be obtained from http://www.via.ecp.fr/~flo/ There is a new configuration option, "autodetect", as well as the command-line options -A, --autodetect, which turn on music auto-detection. Music will be auto-detected at startup, and through each posting menu iteration. If the current music is changed manually via the posting menu, no further autodetection will be performed during that run of the client. Fixes and Improvements: - Charm is now supports LJ client protocol version 1, and thus has some limited support for Unicode posting. Requires at least Python 1.6. - Challenge/response authentication is now supported, and is used by default. Cleartext authentication will continue to be used with older LJ-based sites that do not support challenge/response. - The getpass module is now used to get passwords, so password entry is no longer visible on-screen. - Fixed a cosmetic issue with extra space in prompts (affects Python 2.3). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 22nd, 2003 -- Charm 1.4.0 New features: - Allow music to be specified on the command line with -M or --music. - The various boolean options, like comments and backdating, can now be specified from the command line. This allows you to mass-download parts or all of your journal. - There is now a quick mode, using the --quick command-line option. This takes the post from stdin, and sends it, allowing you to pipe the output of other programs into a post. - You can now check for friend updates from specific friend groups. - Conf files now support the "include" statement, allowing you to have multiple conf files (for different journal profiles, for instance) that share some common options. - A new conf option, "url", allows you to change the URL of the server interface, so you can use DeadJournal, uJournal, etc. - A new conf option, "commpic", allows you to specify your default user picture when posting to a particular community. - You can now set the default security on your posts with the "security" conf option, or the --permit command-line option. - You can now set the default journal/community to post to, using the "journal" conf option, or the --journal command-line option. - Edited posts can now be automatically timestamped with the time of editing, if you enable the "edit_times" conf option. - When you pick the menu option to resume a draft, you now get a menu of drafts in the draft directory. Fixes and Improvements: - Draft file resumption was not working unless --resume was the last parameter specified on the command line. Fixed. - Conf file options were not preserved after a post/edit was finished and another was begun. Fixed. - When viewing a calendar, single-digit months and days were inaccurately showing a zero post count. Fixed. - Journals, picture keywords, and friend groups are now cached, so they're accessible even if you're not logged in. - Some parts of the code have been cleaned up, and Charm now starts up more quickly (mostly by moving the bulk of the code into a library file, thus allowing Python to pre-compile it, making subsequent invocations much faster). Rarely-used modules are no longer imported until we need them. - There is now a setup script, for those who want to install Charm as a standard Python module. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 27th, 2003 -- Charm 1.2.1 Maintenance release: - Charm now runs on Python 1.5.2 (and likely other prior-to-2.0 versions), as well as Python 2.0 and above. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 2nd, 2003 -- Charm 1.2.0 New features: - A polling mode for checking friend updates is now supported. (Similar in display to the 'newmail' Unix utility, it can be run in the background.) - Friend group security is supported. - The new conf option 'show_permissions' (off by default) adds an optional tagline to the top of non-public posts, such as "[ To my friends. ]" The new 'groupheader' conf option sets the tag lines to add. - The opt_noemail post meta-data is now supported. - You can save a post to a file, formatted as if for archive. - The new conf option 'archive_overwrite' (off by default) will overwrite the original archived post with the updated, edited one, when you edit your post using Charm. - A new --login command-line option overrides the nologin conf parameter. Fixes: - Fixed a crash bug when trying to unlink a draft file when none exists. (Occurred when using an editor like emacs that doesn't create zero-length files.) - Gracefully handle failures of urlopen(). - Correctly handle boolean options that defaulted to true. - When a subject is truncated for display, CR/NLs are converted to spaces. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 23rd, 2001 -- Charm 1.1.0 New features: - You now have the option to use an MD5 hashed password rather than a plaintext password. - New conf parameters login/hlogin allow easy management of multiple usernames. - Prompt interactively for username and password if not in .charmrc file. - checkfriends supported. - Added new conf param, archive_subdirs, which puts subdirectories under the main archive dir for each journal. - Cache server mood data in ~/.charmcache file. Bugfixes: - Fixed non-existent draft file crashes (can happen as the result of invoking an editor without writing anything). - The archive_dir param now properly understands ~username. - If the organization of the archive uses year, don't use year in the filename; ditto month. - Graceful handling of KeyboardInterrupt and EOFError exceptions. - Cleaner for pydoc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 25th, 2001 -- Charm 1.0.1 Initial release.
